Pack meeting this Sunday, January 28 at 3:30 pm.

After a successful Pinewood Derby Workshop at the Mixxer, many scouts have a great start to their cars! In this issue:

Pinewood Derby – all you need to know in five paragraphs
Scout Sunday – general overview
Still need a PWD “Kit”?

My kid has a block of wood. We cut it into a shape. Now what??
Finishing the Design. If you have cut out the basic design, now it’s time to fine-tune it. Get the shape of the car ready for paint. You might use a small hand saw or carving knife as needed but mostly, this means sanding. Lots of sanding. Have your scout sand as much as they have the grit to do!

Painting. When the sanding is finished, the car can be painted. “Paint” can include, stickers, markers, bedazzling, whatever your scout would like and is in the budget!

Weight. 5.0 ounces is the maximum weight (all cars are weighed on a postal scale prior to the race to ensure they do not exceed 5.0). There are a lot of ways to add extra weight – anything from glued-on quarters to pre-fabbed weights from the scout shop. Think about, WHERE to put the weight for best effect, and WHEN to attach weights so it does not interfere with your painting process.

Wheels. This is generally the last step. Wheels can be tapped in gently, or pushed in. Take care that the “axles” go into the body of the car straight as it can be easy to break out the wooden grooves the axles are inserted into. Polishing wheels and axles are extra touches you can do at your discretion.

Timeframe. You’ve got several weeks to do all of the above so have fun with it! Cars will need to be “checked-in” the night before the race, on Friday, Feb 23 (exact time TBA, generally around 5 pm). Once the car is checked-in, it will be weighed and impounded until the Saturday morning race.

Scout Sunday: Coming up in February
Scout Sunday consists of two activities.

Scouting for Food – our annual food drive. Taking place over two Sundays, Feb 4 and 11, Pack 910 will distribute bags to neighbors to collect non-perishable foods. On the second Sunday, Pack 910 will revisit those neighbors to collect those bags.

Scout Sunday – at the worship service. On Sunday, Feb 11 at the 9 am worship service at St. Paul’s scouts and their families have an opportunity to help usher, and to be recognized as part of the ministry of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church. If you would like to participate in this, please let me know.

More information about both of these events will be covered in the Pack meeting on Sunday, Jan 28.

I didn’t get a PWD kit yet – how do I pick it up?
IF you did not attend the workshop at the Mixxer or did not pick up a PWD, no worries! Scoutmaster Dyer has a box of kits on his front porch. You are welcome to come and pick one up and initial your name on the sheet with the box. Do so at 2005 Colonial Place. Otherwise, we will have the kits at the Pack meeting on Jan 28 and you can pick one up then.

Yours in Scouting,
Daniel Lobb
