Popcorn
What a success! In our first year selling popcorn, you scouts sold $7,350! That means that $2,425.50 will be returned to the pack in the form of commissions. This money will make scouting more affordable for future families and allow the pack to invest in updated camping equipment! Thank you for being patient with us as we iron out the wrinkles during our first year! Here’s what to expect next:

  • October 24th: You should have been alerted what prize level your Scout achieved
  • October 28th by 6:00 PM: Prize selections due via email to Christopher.R.Dyer
  • November 17th: Popcorn will be picked up (Volunteers Needed!)
  • November 20th: Popcorn will be distributed to scouts at den meetings
  • November 27th: All popcorn must be distributed and payment received by scout
  • November 30th: All payments due to pack and total payment due to council

Additional Notes

  • Please see order form for prize levels and rules
  • If you and your scouts are available on 11/17, please let me know as we will be picking up our pack’s popcorn order and may need help sorting and packing
  • Best practice is to email in-person buyers prior to delivery dates so they are prepared with payment (cash/check).
  • Checks can be made out to Pack 910.
  • If cash or check are not available, have the buyer pay you, the parent, using Venmo, PayPal, I.O.U., gold nugget, etc. and you sum this amount in a payment to the pack.

If you posted on social media about the popcorn sale, please let me know and we will enter them into the raffle to win a $50 Amazon gift card! I have heard from the following parents so please let us know if you posted and your scout should be added to this list!

Den Meeting Recaps from October 23

Lion Rank (Kindergarten)
The Lions worked on their King of the Jungle and Animal Kingdom adventures.

  • Explain what it means to be a good citizen.
  • Explain what it means to be a leader.
  • Choose two energy saving projects to practice in your home for two weeks.

Homework:

  • If you missed the meeting, please review the requirements above in the Lion rank book and let your den leader know when complete. Use what your scouts learned about citizenship and being a leader throughout the next two weeks to reinforce the message.
  • Hold your scouts accountable to following through on the two energy saving projects they selected. This delayed gratification and sense of accomplishment is key to the Cub Scout program!
  • Go through the How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide with your scout. Please cover this material at your discretion and let your Den Leader know when complete.
  • Lions is a great introduction to Cub Scouts and we have plenty of room for more friends! Earn the Recruiter patch by promoting our program to other families as it is never too late to get started and easy to catch up!

Tiger Rank (First Grade)
The Tigers worked on the Team Tiger adventure this week.

  • With your parent, guardian, other caring adult, or den, talk about what it means to be part of a team. List some of the teams you are on (den, pack, family, class, etc.). and explain how you can help each one. Explain what it means to be a leader.
  • With your den, talk about your Tiger team. Then make a chart showing all the different ways team members can help the den. Volunteer to take your turn doing at least two different jobs, one of which is leading the Pledge of Allegiance.
  • With your family, talk about how family members each have a role in the family team. Then pick a job that you will do to help the team. Follow through by doing that job at least three times during the next three weeks.

Homework:

  • If you missed the meeting, please review the requirements above in the Lion rank book and let your den leader know when complete. Use what your scouts learned about being part of a team throughout the next two weeks to reinforce the message. I’ll be having the Tigers conduct their tasks at the next three meetings so prepare your scouts for this responsibility!

Bear Rank (Third Grade)
The Bears worked on the Bear Claws adventure this week by earning their whittling chip and learned how to start a fire!

  • Know the safety rules for handling a knife.
    • A knife is a tool, not a toy
    • Know how to sharpen a knife.
    • A sharp knife is safer than a dull knife because it is less likely to slip and cut you.
    • Keep the blade clean.
    • Never carry an open pocketknife
    • When you are not using your knife, close it and put it away.
    • When you are using the cutting blade, do not try to make big shavings or chips. Easy does it.
    • Make a safety circle. Before you pick up your knife to use it, stretch your arm out and turn in a circle. If you cannot touch anyone or anything else, it is safe to use your knife. While using your knife, be sure to watch in case someone walks toward you and gets too close.
  • Show that you know how to take care of and use a pocketknife.
  • Make a carving with a pocketknife. Work with your den leader or other adult when doing this.
  • Read, understand and promise to abide by the “Knives Are Not Toys” guidelines.
    • Close the blade with the palm of your hand.
    • Never use a knife on something that will dull or break it.
    • Be Careful that you do not cut yourself or any person nearby.
    • Never use a knife to strip the bark from a tree.
    • Do not carve your initials into anything that does not belong to you.
  • Read, understand and promise to abide by the “Pocketknife Pledge.” – In return for the privilege of carrying a pocketknife to designated Cub Scout functions, I agree to the following:
    • I will treat my pocketknife with the respect due a useful tool.
    • I will always close my pocketknife and put it away when not in use.
    • I will not use my pocketknife when it might injure someone near me.
    • I promise never to throw my pocketknife for any reason.
    • I will use my pocketknife in a safe manner at all times.

Homework:

  • If you missed the meeting, please review the requirements above in the Bear rank book and let your den leader know when complete. If your scout has earned their Whittling Chip, it’s OK to begin allowing them to carry their pocket knife under your supervision (while out in the yard with you on the weekends, running errands, etc.) If you really want to make your scout’s day, ask them to use their knife to help you (open a package or letter, cut off a tag, etc.) Praise good behavior and correct behavior that goes against the guidelines above.
  • Go through the How to Protect Your Children From Child Abuse: A Parent’s Guide with your scout. Please cover this material at your discretion and let your Den Leader know when complete.
  • Bears is a great introduction to Cub Scouts and we have plenty of room for more friends! Earn the Recruiter patch by promoting our program to other families as it is never too late to get started and easy to catch up!
